With an aging population, senior living facilities are a growing genre in the construction world, with plenty of competition to see which firms can pack top quality materials and amenities into a well-rounded package.
This year’s Top Projects are no exception. The variety and breadth of projects submitted have been impressive, and one of the finest examples of this type is the Ackerly at Sherwood Senior Living built by general contractor Pence Construction for developer Rembold Properties. This 148,800-square-foot, three-story, wood-framed structure provides 117 assisted living apartments and 20 memory care units for residents needing the structure and care a facility of this type can provide.
When it comes to design, the Ackerly aims to evoke a mid-20th century appearance that will be familiar to its residents, yet modern at the same time. It uses a striking fly-away roof, wood-tone metal panel siding and a huge cantilever Porte cohere to lend the building its distinct appearance.
When it comes to amenities, the Ackerly at Sherwood outdoes the competition by including an enclosed dog park, community garden outdoor walking paths, and even a high-end Bocce ball court. On the inside, there is a theater, salon, fitness center and bistro area that includes a full bar.
